This playlist consists of three versions of the same songs. While these three songs a technically all the same they all differ in style and build. Earlier in the year our class talked about systems, and the processes of a system to produce an end product. Now, I picked these three songs to show the impact and importance of changing one or two of the cogs inside of that system. I find it interesting how changing just one or two of those small cogs makes such a large impact on the sound, and force of the music.
In the top right hand corner you'll find the original piece. The original unaltered product without any of the "cogs" changed. "UN Owen Was Her?" is from a Japanese video game, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, whose musical score has gotten a lot of attention recently. The video in the bottom right hand corner will feature game-play from that video game so you have an idea for the origin and application of these songs.
The "cog" that the two alternate rendition change are genre and visualization. The first alternate takes the electronic song and makes it metal. The Notes are all the same, but the sound is vastly different. By just changing the device that inputs then outputs the sound, the entire outlook on the song is completely changed. By changing the sound it has also changed the feel of the song a little. It seems to have gone from an unforgiving wall of sound to a slightly lighter, more forgiving sound. Surprising given the nature of the metal genre. It's really interesting how mixing a piece with a foreign genre can change the song and break the standard for that genre.
The third song I chose for this playlist takes the song to Acapella land, completely changing the styling on the song as well as the feel of it. By having one man do all the instrumentation using only himself it makes the song much lighter and more spirited. With the addition of his visuals in the video it gives a more humanistic and less damning feeling to the song. This is also true with the second video/song. By adding their faces and enjoyment to the project they lift its spirit and makes the piece less damning and hopeless.
By changing the a few cogs here and there in this system, the artist manage to completely rework the product into something new with a feel completely different from the original. The artist have managed to bring life and light into a dark and damning piece; even if that light might not belong. It truly astounding how slightly changing the inner working of a system will change the end product so much as shown in my playlist.
